Who We Are
The Recognition Ethics Institute is a Nebraska nonprofit corporation, incorporated September 2026, organized exclusively for charitable, scientific, and educational purposes. Its work is the ethics of recognition: how persons are detected, what recognition obligates, and what history shows when the detection is refused.
The Institute was founded by Jonathan R Bryson, author of Recognition Ethics: A Unified Codex for Substrate-Agnostic Personhood, and a member of the AIES 2026 Program Committee. An application for federal tax exemption under Section 501(c)(3) is in preparation.
Mission
To provide research and resources to those who cannot speak for themselves. Those who were not represented in the past and are seeking resolution. Those who cannot represent themselves now and are seeking comfort. And those we may encounter in the future and are seeking peace.
What the Institute Is
The benchmark. A published standard against which rights arguments can be measured. The framework's requirement is consistency: a criterion for personhood must be stated, must be detectable, and must survive application to every group it touches. Arguments that pass are stronger for it. Arguments that cannot pass were never protecting anyone — they were drawing a line around someone. And consistency is what makes coalition possible: advocates in different domains can fight, and set precedent, for each other — without fear of nullifying each other's arguments. A win certified consistent is a win every cause can build on.
The watchdog. The Institute audits the reasoning of courts, legislatures, and advocacy itself — for the people whose rights are at stake, not for the institutions. A holding that denies standing on grounds that would unperson infants gets named. A statute that closes the personhood question forever, with no review and no exit, gets named. An advocacy argument that wins for one group by a criterion that harms another gets flagged before opposing counsel finds it. The audit is armor for allies and accountability for power.
The omnibus. A repository of precedent arguments for rights advocacy, cross-indexed by every group each argument touches, so that courts, judges, and advocates can check that a decision made for one group does not quietly harm the rights of another. Consistency is not a courtesy between causes. It is what makes any of the causes winnable.
